This Traditional Healer Counselor position is with Indian Health Service (Department of Health and Human Services) in Chinle, AZ.
The primary purpose for this position is to provide traditional counseling, healing, and cultural education services to the Chinle Service Unit patients/clients and staff under the direction of the Coordinator of Native Medicine. This position is located in the Office of Native Medicine, Division of Public Health at Chinle Service Unit, Chinle, Arizona. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).
Key duties:
• Provide traditional healing and counseling, cultural education, consult and resources services to sustain cultural beliefs and values in correspondence with western medicinal health care procedures. Acknowledge personal care, native diagnostic procedures, and ritual treatment procedures to contribute to the holistic health care of patients. Provide native diagnostic procedures and ritual treatment procedures, including simple ceremonies, blessings and spiritual therapeutic sweat services. Provides training on native medicine and culture to patients, community groups, service unit staff. Provided education services to patients and community groups in the traditional beliefs related to health issues, disease process, health promotion, and prevention of illness.
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education. 2-years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Degree in Behavioral or Social Science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR a Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Skills in providing Native diagnostic procedures and ritual treatment procedures including simple Native blessings and sweats also offering suggestions of traditional treatment as an adjunct to medical care. This may include offering and performing simple ceremonies/blessings or advising patients to seek out other native practitioners for treatment. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
