Chief of Science and Resource Management

This Chief of Science and Resource Management position is with National Park Service (Department of the Interior) in Page, AZ. You will serve as a Chief of Science and Resource Management with National Park Service at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate. Key duties: • Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Serves as the senior principal advisor in the management of natural and cultural resources and is responsible for program development, implementation and oversight. Carries out program management duties by developing work plans and schedules, scopes of work, cost estimates, and proposals, and/or grants to justify funding request and accomplish goals. Provide accurate and reliable advice and guidance to park leadership on all matters relating to resource management and tribal relations. Develops and maintains effective working relations with Native Americans, other traditional associations, and related groups, agencies and the public; represents the superintendent when working with others on resource stewardship. Provide technical and substantive direct supervision to a highly specialized staff. Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position, you must possess the Basic Requirements for at least one of the series below AND the Specialized Experience Requirements (minimum qualifications) for the GS-13 grade level. BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR GENERAL ANTROPOLOGY GS-0190 SERIES: In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position, you must meet at least one of the following to qualify for this series: Degree: bachelor's or higher degree in appropriate field of anthropology. You must provide transcripts. -OR- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in an appropriate field of anthropology, or related course work, plus appropriate experience or additional education for a total of 4 years. The combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described above. You must provide transcripts. -OR- Experience: 4 years of experience in anthropology performing research, museum work, or similar professional-level work. BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ARCHEOLOGY GS-0193 SERIES: In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position, you must meet at least one of the following to qualify for this series: Degree: bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work AND Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school.-OR- Related Curriculum: degree in Anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archeological field school). You MUST provide transcripts. -OR- Combination: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. This combination must demonstrate that an applicant possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archaeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study. You MUST provide transcripts. -OR- Experience: 4 years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR GENERAL NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES GS-0401 SERIES: In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position, you must meet at least one of the following to qualify for this series: Degree: bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. You MUST provide transcripts. Combination: a combination of education and experience that included courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "1" above. You must include hours worked per week on resume if combining education and experience and you must include transcripts within your application. BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ECOLOGY GS-0408 SERIES: In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position, you must meet the following to qualify for this series: Degree: bachelor's or higher degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. You MUST provide transcripts. BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR BOTANY GS-0430 SERIES: In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position, you must meet at least one of the following to qualify for this series: Degree: bachelor's or higher degree in botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany. You MUST provide transcripts. Combination: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must include hours worked per week on your resume and you must provide transcripts within your application. - AND- FOR ALL SERIES: In addition to the Basic Requirements, as stated above, you must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE (MINIMUM QUALIFICATION) REQUIREMENTS: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience MUST include: 1) conducting resource management activities such as: planning, scheduling, and/or assigning work to subordinate staff, providing technical and policy direction according to agency resource management policies, budget management, and supervision; 2) working with other agencies and organizations to develop project statements and/or memorandums of agreement or understanding; and 3) seeking grants and other fund sources.
