This Health Technician (Lab) position is with Indian Health Service (Department of Health and Human Services) in Chinle, AZ.
The purpose of this position is to provide direct patient care and clerical technical, and administrative support in the Send/Out/Phlebotomy and waived testing area. This position is located at the Chinle Service unit, Division of Clinical Services, Laboratory Department in Chinle, Arizona. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).
Key duties:
• Provide direct patient care and perform phlebotomy and specimen collection. Identify patients and properly label, handle, and process specimens. Prepare and send laboratory specimens to outside/reference laboratories. Perform waived laboratory testing according to established procedures. Monitor and maintain laboratory supplies and inventory. Order, receive, organize, and restock unit supplies. Follow laboratory safety, infection-control, and quality-assurance procedures. Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Entering patient lab requisitions. Direct patients and visitors. Answering routine inquires. Instructing patient on proper collection of specimens. Collecting lab test results. Assisting with providing annual phlebotomy/specimen collection. OR 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation OR A combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-04 grade level. GS-05 Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Reviewing patient lab orders, practicing phlebotomy techniques, performing waived lab testing. Collecting, organizing and extracting data for reports. Filing and faxing patient reports. Requesting medical information. OR Successfully completed 4 years of education beyond the high school level. Education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR A combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-05 grade level. GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Entering, verifying and following up on test results. Instructing hands on training. Performing weekly/monthly inventory of phlebotomy supplies. Performing waived lab testing. Answering Inquiries regarding laboratory reports. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
