This Laundry Worker position is with Veterans Health Administration (Department of Veterans Affairs) in Tucson, AZ. The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) is seeking a Laundry Worker to join the Environmental Management Service. The selected candidate will operate a delivery truck under 26,000 pounds, transporting laundry across the 116-acre campus with approximately 979,000 sq ft of multi-story buildings. The incumbent will work in the laundry/linen unit, strictly following infection control protocols, including maintaining clear separation between clean and soiled areas. Key duties: • LINEN PROCESSING Assist in assembling linen requirements from bulk supplies based on center-specific quotas. Use electronic or online systems to order linen from vendors. Enter linen data into Excel for tracking and analysis; utilize Outlook email. Fold, pair, count, and store received items like scrubs and pajamas. Consolidate textile items (sheets, blankets, pillowcases, towels) into set quantities. Load, tag, and cover linen carts to prevent contamination; transport via trailer or truck efficiently. Rotate linens at 46+ destinations, placing older linens on top to minimize vendor losses. Work in sterile conditions to inspect, fold, and stock linens for delivery. Ensure soiled linens are kept separate from clean linens. Maintain a 96-hour contingency linen supply. LINEN DELIVERY Deliver carts to 46+ locations, including inpatient wards, clinics, labs, kitchens, residential units, and outpatient services. Carts weigh 400-1200 lbs. Scrubs are sized, paired, and prepped for vending machines with 34+ options; machines have over 320 slots filled twice daily. Reset vending machines after loading or indicate empty slots. Remove soiled scrubs and store in carts for vendor pick-up. Examples include open/closed vending machines for restocking and soiled linen collection. HOUSEKEEPING DUTIES Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of work areas and equipment. OFF-SCHEDULE DELIVERIES Deliver linen during shortages outside scheduled times; perform small tasks or other duties as assigned. OTHER DUTIES Participate in semi-annual linen inventories and perform additional tasks as directed. Licensure: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Physical Requirements: Work requires effective coordination and good physical fitness. The role involves regularly lifting stacks and bundles of linens, weighing up to 30 pounds. The position also involves walking, stooping, and bending frequently. Additionally, assistance is needed in pushing heavy carts on and off trucks and trailers, with weights ranging from 400 to 1,200 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Frequent transitions between heated indoor spaces and cold outdoor environments are common during winter months. There is a potential for exposure to infectious diseases in patient areas when handling soiled laundry. When working in storage areas and the loading dock, the employee will be exposed to drafty conditions and fluctuating temperatures throughout their shift.
