This Medical Support Assistant position is with Indian Health Service (Department of Health and Human Services) in Chinle, AZ.
Join the Indian Health Service as a Medical Support Assistant serving communities in the Navajo Area. This position offers an opportunity to support patients and healthcare professionals by providing essential medical and clerical services that contribute to quality patient care. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).
Key duties:
• Provides front-line patient support by welcoming patients and visitors, directing calls, escorting patients, assisting with emergencies and walk-ins, answering routine inquiries, and maintaining accurate patient logs before and after evaluation, treatment, and disposition. Prepares minutes, reports, and memoranda while ensuring proper formatting, grammar, punctuation, and medical terminology. Uses computer systems to schedule appointments, update patient information, print documents, and perform word-processing tasks. Maintains patient records and administrative reports, reviews records for accuracy and compliance, prepares forms for surgeries and procedures, monitors supplies, and orients new clinic staff on file locations, forms, and resources. Provides administrative support by routing requisitions, delivering specimens, retrieving test results, and assisting with supply and equipment management. Coordinates referrals and consultations with other departments and schedules patient follow-up appointments.
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates your ability to perform the work of this position at the GS-04 level. OR Two (2) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial, or technical school, junior college, college, or university. OR A combination of education and experience that, when combined, fully meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-04. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
