This Dietitian position is with Indian Health Service (Department of Health and Human Services) in Whiteriver, AZ. Key duties: • Assesses nutritional status and plans appropriate nutrition therapy for a variety of disease states and for the prevention of disease. Will develop, implement, and monitor the nutritional care plan based on physician diet prescription and the dietitian's nutritional assessment of the patients and age specific intent. Provide nutritional education to individuals and families so patients can achieve defined outcomes. Documents significant changes in patient's nutritional status. Contribute to long-range plans and objectives concerning nutrition and dietetic services that are needed by the ambulatory patients and their families. Physical Demands: The work involves walking, sitting, standing, reaching and bending in the assessment and treatment of patients. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirements Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics(external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)(external link) (formerly American Dietetic Association(external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet one of the following Minimum Qualifications and Selective Factor stated below: SELECTIVE FACTOR: Registered Dietitian: (The IHS licensure policy (PHS instructions 338-3) requires IHS Dietitians to possess and maintain current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.) Possess and maintain current registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth or Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Must provide proof of a current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration with your application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: You must meet one of the following requirements to meet the GS-11 grade level: Education: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or Experience: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks, examples include: Applying professional knowledge, concepts, principles and methodologies of the science of nutrition and applying the principles, practices and procedures to provide optimal nutrition care to patients according to established and specific procedures; planning, organizing, coordinating and evaluating nutrition programs; assessing nutritional needs and therapeutic diets for individuals or groups located in hospitals, community, care facilities according to nutritional needs; consulting with other healthcare team members on patient nutritional care; used judgement, initiative and resources in deviating from established methods; influencing or persuading people, resolving problems utilizing professional knowledge of dietetic principles, practices and procedures; applying knowledge of medical practices, effects of medication and the effects of other treatment modalities that affect patient's diet, evaluate diet habits, etc. to counsel, teach and educate importance of quality food, physician's diet prescription to promote social and physical well-being of patients; served as a resource person on nutritional requirements and research related to diseases and prevention of such; or Combination of graduate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position You must meet the following requirement to meet the GS-12 grade level: Experience: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks, examples include: Planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating a comprehensive Nutrition and Dietetics Program. Responsible for the dietetic function in a general medical and surgical hospital when the program presents difficulties in the dietary treatment of patients, including several specialized medical programs, including renal dialysis patients; a substantial portion of the patients requiring treatment for chronic problems, such as liver disorders, alcoholism, carcinoma, diabetes, infections, and tuberculosis; and the hospital has an active nutrition clinic for outpatients, and provides advisory services for community facilities.
