This Stitcher, Costume Shop position is with University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.
Support costume shop manager and costume designers in fittings and garment alterations. Sew, construct, maintain, and repair costumes for productions. Ensure costumes are cleaned, repaired, and stored properly between productions. Assist in organizing and maintaining the costume shop, including inventory management of fabrics, patterns, and other supplies. Assist with budgeting and ordering of materials as needed. Assist with training and mentoring students in costume and garment construction and maintenance. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Skilled in using various sewing machines and hand-sewing techniques. Knowledge of different types of stitches, seams, and hems. Ability to read and interpret sewing patterns, which involves understanding symbols, measurements, and construction methods. Familiarity with different types of fabrics and knowledge of their properties and how they behave during sewing. Ability to take accurate measurements and fitting garments to ensure they meet the desired specifications. Physical Requirements: The person will have to stand for extended periods, but can sit as needed. Ability to transport/move costumes and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs. Will be able to use a “rack” to move the costumes. Manual dexterity for detailed sewing tasks.
